Growing Peppers Indoors – Guidelines & Tips

Growing peppers indoors is a great way to enjoy fresh peppers throughout the year, even during winter months when outdoor growing is not possible. Here are some guidelines and tips that will help you get started.

Selecting the Right Pepper Variety

Before you start, it is important to select the right pepper variety. Hotter varieties such as jalapenos and habaneros are best for indoor growing, as they require less space and are hardy enough to withstand the indoor environment. Sweet peppers such as bell peppers or pimentos can also be grown indoors, however they will require more space and care.

Location

Choose a warm, sunny spot such as a south-facing window for the best results. If the sun isn’t an option, you can use grow lights to create the proper amount of light for the peppers.

Containers & Soil

Container gardening is ideal for peppers, because it allows for proper drainage and provides quick access to the roots. Choose pots or containers that are at least 8 inches deep, with holes in the bottom for drainage. Fill the containers with a high-quality, well-draining potting soil mix.

Watering & Fertilizing

The soil should be kept moist at all times; however, be careful not to overwater as this can lead to root rot. Fertilize the soil with a liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks. Be sure to follow the instructions on the fertilizer label.

Harvesting

Most peppers will grow from seed to harvest in about 70 days. Harvest peppers when they are fully ripened; they should feel firm and have a deep red, orange, or yellow color. If the peppers are still green, you can leave them to ripen on the plant.

Pests & Diseases

Pests and diseases can be an issue when growing peppers indoors. To prevent these issues, inspect the peppers often for any damage, and wash them off with a mild soap and water solution. You can also use neem oil or other natural insecticides if necessary.

Growing peppers indoors is a great way to enjoy fresh vegetables throughout the year. With some careful preparation and the right guidelines, you’ll be sure to have a successful pepper-growing experience.
