DIY Perimeter Alarm to Protect Your Home & Camp

It is important to protect your home and campsite from intruders and wild animals. Installing a perimeter alarm can be a great way to both deter trespassers and alert you of any possible threats. But, what if you don’t have the budget to purchase an expensive, professionally installed alarm system? If that’s the case, don’t worry – you can also build your own DIY perimeter alarm relatively quickly and easily.

Tools & Materials Needed:

  • Motion detector light
  • Solar LED or battery-powered lights
  • Warning signs
  • Wireless doorbells
  • Loudspeaker
  • Durable stakes
  • Drill and screwdriver
  • Cable ties
  • Plywood or cardboard
  • Screws
  • Nails
  • Wire

Instructions

Step 1: Start by establishing a perimeter using wire and nails. You’ll want to secure the wire at least 2ft off the ground and ensure that there are no gaps or weak spots in the perimeter. If you’re using nails, make sure they’re spaced evenly and hammered tightly into the ground.

Step 2: Install several motion-sensing spotlights along the perimeter. Spotlights can be connected to your existing home security system or to a separate, wireless system. Position the lights so that they would detect any activity near the perimeter.

Step 3: Secure your warning signs at each corner of the perimeter. The signs should be large, visible and red in colour. If you don’t have warning signs, then a large piece of plywood or cardboard with the words “Danger!” or “Keep Out” painted on it should suffice.

Step 4: Add a wireless doorbell or loudspeaker near the perimeter, and set it to go off whenever the lights detect activity. The sound should be loud and piercing in order to scare away any potential intruders.

Step 5: Finally, secure all lights, signs and sound devices to the perimeter with durable stakes or cable ties. Test the system before leaving to make sure that it is working correctly.

With a few simple materials and some basic DIY know-how, you can easily create an affordable perimeter alarm that can help protect your home and campsite. With the easy-to-install alarm system in place, you’ll be able to sleep easy knowing that your property is safe and secure.
